Raku firing workshop
Come and experience the wonder of Raku
Raku is a dramatic and exciting firing process and this is your chance to see it for yourself.
Pre fired pots are glazed in preparation for the firing which takes place in a gas powered kiln outside. They’re heated until glowing hot then carefully removed and placed into a container of combustibles to burn. A lid is placed on to create a reduction atmosphere and encourage a metallic finish to the glazes.
Finally the pots are quenched in water before being scrubbed clean.
The process is volatile and full of drama, which is the appeal of this firing technique.

On the day..
You’ll arrive at the studio and make yourself at home.
We’ll learn a bit about the process of raku and see some examples before you choose your pot to work on. There will be a selection of glazes to choose from and you’ll be supported through the process of glazing.
Everyone’s pots will be placed into the kiln to heat up.
As the kiln is doing it’s thing, we’ll pop the kettle on and have a cuppa whilst keeping an eye on the pots progress.
When the pots are glowing hot, they will be removed from the kiln and into a container of sawdust. This is all the drama and smoke.
They’ll sit in there as the glazes mature and change in the reduction atmosphere.
Finally the pots will be quenched in water and you’ll clean them up and see the transformation of your pot in the kiln.
We will spend a lot of the session outside, but whatever the weather, you’ll need to wear long sleeves and trousers. As well as sturdy shoes that cover your toes.
